Tragedy at Columbine
APRIL 20, 1999 - LITTLETON, COLO.

Let the forums begin

The appeal we made yesterday to Boulder Valley citizens for ideas on how our community should deal with the issue of safety in our schools is receiving a healthy response.

The killings at Littleton's Columbine High School produced a powerful wake-up call here. Already, citizens and elected officials are talking about forums and possible actions to address youth violence and safety issues.

The first forum will be Friday night from 6 to 7:30 in the cafeteria at Boulder High School in which everyone is invited. It will be led by school board member Bill De La Cruz, who says he is acting as a concerned citizen and parent, not as a member of the board. "I'm just moving ahead," he says. "I'm tired of kids dying." The discussion will be followed by a candlelight vigil. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own candles.

We still want to hear your ideas on how our community should respond. Do we need public forums in all valley communities? Is there an organization or a group of citizens who would be willing to dedicate themselves to leading an effort to keep our schools safe? What role should our government officials play? Who among you would volunteer to commit yourself to a project built around keeping our schools safe?

You can send us your ideas and thoughts the following ways:

  • By leaving a phone message at (303) 938-9090, Ext. 7654.
  • By sending an e-mail message to news@boulderpublishing.com
  • By writing us at Community Action, Daily Camera, P.O. Box 591, Boulder, Colo. 80306.
  • We appreciate your interest and help.
