![]() APRIL 20, 1999 - LITTLETON, COLO. Broomfield Klebolds inundated with calls Family is unrelated to Columbine High School gunman By Christine Reid
The Klebolds' phone began to ring less than two hours after the gunmen began their massacre at Littleton's Columbine High School. And it kept ringing. Now Larry and Karen Klebold, who have lived in Broomfield for 15 years and run a construction consulting business in the city, want to set the record straight. "We are not associated with that family; we don't know that family," Karen Klebold said. "With such an unusual name, we could be related, but we don't know this family and we certainly don't have Christmas dinners together." Shortly after one of the suspected gunmen was rumored to be Dylan Klebold, the 17-year-old son of Tom and Sue Klebold of Deer Creek Canyon, the calls began to the Broomfield family's home and business. "We've had several harassing phone calls and hang-up calls," Karen Klebold said. Thursday afternoon they fielded a call from an irate Columbine parent, and Wednesday they were awakened in the middle of the night. "They wanted to know if we were the ones that raised the bastard," Karen Klebold said. About 90 percent of the calls have been from journalists around the globe, and the list reads like a who's who in media: Larry King Live, CNN, 48 Hours, Dateline NBC. The family was also visited by reporters, who showed up at their Garden Center office and Northmoor home. Most disturbing was the information the press had on their family, such as that their oldest son, Mason, played baseball at Broomfield High School, Karen Klebold said. Mason Klebold is currently attending a community college in Colorado on a baseball scholarship, and Corry Klebold is a sophomore at Broomfield High and the baseball team's statistician.
