RENO, Nev. A group of parents is pushing for the cancellation of a concert by shock-rocker Marilyn Manson in the wake of last week's Colorado school shootings. Jody Ruggiero, a parent of a Reno high school student, said the cancellation of an April 30 Manson concert near Denver gives her hope that Reno's May 3 concert will be stopped as well. "I've been on the phone to the governor, mayor, the sheriff's department, NAACP," she said. "I think most people do not know they are coming or don't know about them." She accused Manson's band of being anti-social and anti-Christ, and trying to incite young people to violence. "I don't care what your religion is," Ruggiero said. "This is not about censorship. This is about public safety." Nearly two dozen people have called Lawlor Events Center to protest the Manson concert, said Robert Stewart, director of the University of Nevada, Reno concert site. But it's university policy not to restrict arena rental based on content alone, he said. Because of the Colorado massacre, security will be beefed up somewhat and no alcohol will be served at the concert, he added. About 3,000 people are expected to attend the performance lined up by Bill Graham Presents. Sharon Piersol, a Reno mother of two, said she would picket the concert if it's not canceled. "We need to protect our children," she said. "I think it is a time to wake up." But Melody Gough, a buyer for Mirabelli's Music City in Reno, defended the concert. "I just think people are looking for someone to blame," she said. Eric Harris, 18, and Dylan Klebold, 17, killed 12 students and one teacher at Columbine High School before taking their own lives. The two gunmen were members of the "Trenchcoat Mafia" clique, which reportedly favored bands such as Manson's. Manson said in a statement released Tuesday that he was disgusted by Tuesday's violence. He offered his condolences to the victims and their families.
